Kirk Barnes

TRANSPORTATION ENGINEER

Kirk Barnes, M.E., P.E., joined Adamson Engineering as a Transportation Engineer in 2025, bringing over 40 years of experience in the transportation industry.  

EXPERIENCED

Kirk has 13 years of experience with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) as the Director of Transportation Operations in Bryan, Texas.  He managed all technical and design personnel and was responsible for the transportation engineering activities in the district’s ten counties. Kirk is intimately familiar with TxDOT policies and procedures, AASHTO, TMUTCD, NEC as well as numerous other standards and manuals in the traffic engineering field. Kirk holds a Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, both from Texas A&M University. He is also a Professional Engineer licensed in Texas.

RESEARCHER

Kirk spent 12 years as a Research Engineer for Texas A&M Transportation Institute where he lead research for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and TxDOT on numerous transportation projects. During this time, Kirk authored and co-authored a variety of publications and presentations in the field of traffic engineering.

EXPERT

As a Sales Engineer with Tiger Traffic and previously with Iteris Inc., Kirk has assisted TxDOT, contractors, and municipalities with transportation-related equipment needs, recommendations, and procurement. As the Texas Regional Sales Manager with Iteris, Inc., Kirk conducted on-site visits for technical support and improvement of transportation equipment as well as designed plans and provided engineering expertise for intersections and interchanges.

Outside of work, Kirk enjoys automotive restoration and hunting.
